Manchester City offered chance to sign Leeds United ace Illan Meslier in recent hours - Sky Sports - MOT Leeds New 17/8/23

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been offered to Manchester City as a potential option for their goalkeeper issue after between Stefan Ortega and Bayern Munich, reports Florian Plettenberg.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (17 August), the Sky Sports journalist reports that the German champions want to sign Ortega as cover for the injured Manuel Neuer but City don’t want to let the German leave.

That’s despite being offered other options to be their number two goalkeeper this season, including Elland Road’s own Meslier.

“Stefan Ortega and FC Bayern is close to be OFF now after further discussions last night and this morning” he wrote.

“Main reason: Man City/Guardiola still not willing to let him go. Not open for another No. 2 – but several options were offered in the last hours (Meslier and more).”

This is just what we need. When the club are finally starting to get in control of our transfer situation, another key player is being touted about by his representatives.

The French keeper was expected to leave this summer but has earned his NO.1 shirt back ahead of summer signing Karl Darlow, with Daniel Farke admitting he is the first-choice stopper as things stand.

But if Meslier would prefer to sit on the bench at Man City than be the number one at Elland Road then we have little hope of convincing him to stay should someone else come in and offer him a number one spot.

Thankfully City have said no at this time, but that could well change if the Ortega situation were to change between now and the end of the window.

It’s one more thing for the club to have in the back of their minds at this point, because if City make their move we’ll have to be aware that we could be in a situation where we have no time to replace him.
