Leeds United 0 Manchester United 2: Whites attacker big threat but theme continues in defeat - YEP 12/2/23

Image
Leeds United created another host of chances in Sunday's Premier League clash at home to arch rivals Manchester United yet ultimately fell to another defeat as the Red Devils left with a 2-0 victory. Lee Sobot The lively Crysencio Summerville had several good opportunities for the hosts but the Red Devils went ahead with ten minutes left when Marcus Rashford headed home a Luke Shaw cross. The visitors then added a second just five minutes later as Wout Weghorst played in Alejandro Garnacho who fired past Illan Meslier in off the post. Roared on by an incredible crowd, Leeds began brightly and the Whites squandered a fine chance to ahead in the fourth minute when Summerville fired over from close range after the Red Devils failed to properly clear a Max Wober cross from the left. Crunching tackles from Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie either side of the chance raised the noise levels even further and Summerville continually found plenty of space down the right flank. The fi...

Leeds 0-2 Manchester United: Late goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho see Red Devils beat bitter rivals at the second attempt this week at Elland Road to cement top four spot Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory away to Leeds at the second attempt against their rivals this week Erik ten Hag's side had to be patient but Marcus Rashford scored and then Alejandro Garnacho netted Leeds, who are still without a permanent manager, put in a spirited display but couldn't take any points By OLIVER HOLT They had built a wall of sound at Elland Road and the volume had barely dropped, every minute full of fury, loathing, visceral roars and taunts. There were screams of approbation when tackles flew in and jeers of derision when a Manchester United player was hurt. The noise and intensity were relentless. For Erik ten Hag and his team this was football as a test of character. This was trial by hostility. Then, 10 minutes from the end, the noise, fury and hope ...

Manchester United 2 Leeds United 2: Whites show resolve and energy to claim point to be proud of - Yorkshire Post 8/2/23

After all the criticism Jesse Marsch took for desperately trying to put positive spins on points dropped, it would be churlish not to acknowledge that Leeds United failed to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. By Stuart Rayner But as 2-2 draws go, it was a massively encouraging one. "We're Leeds and we're proud of it," the away end sang at full-time, a refreshing change from Sunday's calls for a change in the dugout. Yes, Leeds took a 2-0 lead and were unable to keep it but the history books and form books both tell what a treat a point was. And it could easily have been three, with Brenden Aaronson hitting the base of the post from a free-kick at 2-1. It is 13 years since Leeds last won at Old Trafford, 21 since they beat the Red Devils in a Premier League match and 42 since their previous league victory at the home of their bitterest rivals. Whereas Leeds had won two of their last 17 matches, Manchester United had not lost at h...

Jadon Sancho rescues draw as managerless Leeds end Manchester United’s home run - Independent 8/2/23

Leeds United 2-2 Manchester United: Sancho came off the bench to score his first goal since September and deny the visitors a famous win Richard Jolly If it is a one-game reign, then what a game. Michael Skubala may return to the shadows, to the world of Under-21 management, but only after a heady taste of the limelight. Under the unknown, Leeds ended Manchester United’s run of 13 successive home victories. For an hour, they were on course for a first league victory at Old Trafford in Skubala’s lifetime. But, with and without Jesse Marsch, Leeds have a tendency to lose leads and Manchester United have the resolve to mount a response. Leeds were marching on together without Marsch, contributing to a classic, playing with a verve and a dynamism that may have been a reaction to the manager’s sacking. But, by the end, they only have two wins in 18 league games. Yet it was about a newcomer, a returning hero and the great constant in every Manchester United storyline at the moment. Whe...

Jesse Marsch demands better protection for Leeds strikers after recent blows - Independent 12/1/23

Crysencio Summerville was forced off with an ankle injury during last Sunday’s FA Cup draw at Cardiff Mark Walker Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has called for more protection for strikers from Premier League referees after Crysencio Summerville was ruled out for a month. Summerville, who burst on to the first-team scene with four league goals in as many matches before the World Cup break, was forced off with an ankle injury during last Sunday’s FA Cup draw at Cardiff. Marsch, whose side play at Aston Villa on Friday, said he was unhappy with some of the challenges on both Summerville and fellow forward Willy Gnonto in Cardiff. “Crysencio Summerville is out for a month with an ankle injury,” Marsch said. “The ankle injury sustained in the Cardiff match is a little bit of a talking point for me. “Between Cree and Willy specifically, opponents have tried to bully them, they have a hard time containing them and I don’t think refs have protected those two well enough. “It’s m...

Cardiff City 2 Leeds United 2: Teenage sub saves Whites in dramatic finale after penalty miss - YEP 8/1/23

Image
Teenage substitute striker Sonny Perkins bagged a 93rd-minute equaliser to save Leeds United’s skin in the FA Cup third round and seal a 2-2 draw at Cardiff City and Elland Road replay. Lee Sobot Cardiff went ahead with their first real attack in the 24th minute as Jaden Philogene-Bidace fired home after Mark Harris had been played in behind Pascal Struijk and Junior Firpo. The Bluebirds then doubled their lead just seven minutes later as Sheyi Ojo netted from the middle of the box after Andy Rinomhota this time played the ball in behind Diego Llorente. But Leeds finally burst into life following a triple substitution ten minutes into the second half and one of the substitutes in Rodrigo pulled a goal back less than five minutes after coming on when heading home from a short corner after a Sam Greenwood cross. The Whites were then awarded a penalty with ten minutes left as Joel Bagan kept out a Junior Firpo drive with a handball on the line for which he was sent off but Rodrigo...

Leeds United 2-2 West Ham United: Team spirit - The Square Ball 5/1/23

Image
NOT HISTORY Written by: Moxcowhite • Daniel Chapman For half an hour I thought, through a prism of the past, I was seeing the future of Leeds United, at least for the rest of this season. Brenden Aaronson’s 22 years of talent, stretched by the Premier League and the World Cup, snapped, giving a goal to West Ham. Crysencio Summerville, also cracking in his youth, was subbed off instead of being sent off for leaving immature retributive stud marks just below Vladimír Coufal’s knee. In their place came Jackie Harrison, who from deep in midfield fed Rodrigo with irresistible passes straight and through West Ham’s defence, that had to and did find at least an equaliser. And, setting the tone for the comeback with desperately necessary drive from midfield, was Mateusz Klich. These were two of the players who have delighted us since 2018. Frustrated us, too. Klich had yet another impressive night from the bench, and still managed to miskick a shot sending the ball so high, and so far aw...

Leeds United coach averts gaze, Elland Road tears and touchline antics: Good day, bad day and off-camera moments - YEP 5/1/23

Leeds United bid farewell to experienced midfielder Mateusz Klich at Elland Road on Wednesday night as the Polish international prepares to embark on a new journey in the United States Joe Donnohue Klich broke down on the pitch at full-time and had to be consoled, first by Luke Ayling, then several other teammates as the realisation this would be his final time representing Leeds at Elland Road dawned upon him. The 32-year-old was given a guard of honour by the squad and members of club staff as he departed the field one last time, unafraid to show his emotion having spent five-and-a-half years at the club where he has become a cult hero for his role in the Whites’ 2020 promotion and beyond. Prior to Klich’s Elland Road swansong, Leeds had played out a 2-2 draw with West Ham who had gone five straight Premier League games without picking up a point, but almost left with three if not for Rodrigo’s 70th minute finish. The Whites toiled once more against a side stationed below them ...

Leeds United 2 West Ham United 2: Whites pay the price for only showing their best when behind once more - Yorkshire Post 4/1/23

"What have I done?" was written all over Brenden Aaronson's face after gifting West Ham United a goal at Elland Road. By Stuart Rayner At least it was not a winner- Rodrigo saw to that – and it took a brilliant Lukasz Fabianski save to stop the Spaniard snatching victory with the last act, but drawing 2-2 with the Hammers was not a good night's work for Leeds United. They did not just fail to take a golden opportunity, they donated one too. Keeping a clean sheet at Newcastle United, winning at Liverpool, hammering Chelsea, this is what Jesse Marsch's Whites are capable of. When the onus is on them, they are not so good. Like their passionate fanbase, they tend to produce their best when the odds are against them. They specialise in defiance but need to be better at taking what ought to be theirs. Once Gianluca Scamacca accepted Aaronson's charity to put West Ham 2-1 up, the crowd roared their team on and Marsch's histrionics towards "the c...

Leeds United 2 West Ham 2: Whites ace enters record books but VAR dismay in Elland Road thriller - YEP 4/1/23

Image
Leeds United’s first game of the new year ended in a 2-2 draw against Wednesday night’s Premier League visitors West Ham United after a pulsating and end-to-end contest at Elland Road. Lee Sobot Leeds went ahead in the 27th minute through a clinical finish from Willy Gnonto after a lovely move and one-two with Crysencio Summerville who laid on a perfect through ball. At 19 years and 60 days old, Gnonto became the third youngest Italian scorer in Premier League history and also the youngest Leeds top-flight scorer since James Milner in April 2004. West Ham, though, equalised in the 45th minute after the intervention of VAR led to an Irons penalty for Pascal Struijk's foul on Jarrod Bowen and Paqueta coolly converted the spot kick. The Hammers then went ahead less than one minute into the second half as a misplaced pass from Brenden Aaronson was cut out by Gianluca Scamacca who punished Aaronson with a perfect first time finish from the edge of the box that went in off the post...

West Ham denied much-needed win by Rodrigo’s late equaliser in thriller at Leeds - Independent 4/1/23

Leeds United 2-2 West Ham United: David Moyes seemed to be heading for a crucial victory thanks to goals by Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca but it was not to be Richard Jolly If David Moyes’s losing run is over, it will need more than one draw to ensure he does not lose his job. When Wilfried Gnonto put Leeds ahead, West Ham were headed for a sixth successive defeat and the relegation zone; their most successful manager since Harry Redknapp may have been destined for the sack. Yet when Rodrigo scored Leeds’ classy equaliser, Moyes was denied the victory that would have solidified his position, taken his side above their hosts and lent the impression a new year would bring a shift in fortunes. Instead, West Ham have to console themselves with a first point since October and the sense a huge outlay may not have all been in vain. If Moyes’s signings put his job at risk, perhaps they have now bought him a little more time. Such respite as he got came from players who formed part ...

Every word from Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch's pre-Manchester City press conference - YEP 22/12/22

Leeds United are finally closing in on a return to Premier League action and Whites boss Jesse Marsch held his pre-match press conference today ahead of next week’s hosting of Manchester City. Lee Sobot Leeds signed off for the World Cup break with a 4-3 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur way back on Saturday, November 12. Forty-six days later, the Whites will return to action next Wednesday evening with the visit of Pep Guardiola’s defending champions and odds-on title favourites City. City are in EFL Cup action this evening at home to Liverpool in their first game back after the World Cup at which they had 16 players representing the club. Leeds had three players in action in Qatar in USA international duo Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson plus Rasmus Kristensen with Denmark. As part of the six-and-a-half week pause to the season, Marsch’s side took in a week-long training camp in Spain where they recorded a 2-1 victory against Elche on the back of a win against Preston North End in ...
