Gnonto and Sinisterra targeted in new Leeds United chant plus Gelhardt fracas in moments missed - Leeds Live 13/8/23
Leeds United lost 1-0 to Birmingham City in the Championship on Saturday afternoon at St Andrew's and here are some of the moments you may have missed
“If you refuse to play, then don’t come back.” Leeds
United’s travelling support made themselves perfectly heard at St Andrew’s on
Saturday afternoon.
After confirmation Wilfried Gnonto had ruled himself out of
contention because he had been told he would not be sold, there was a
resounding reaction from the away end. If the Italian is to have any kind of future
at Elland Road there is an awful lot of work to do. Bridges have been burned.
Afters between Gelhardt and Long
Joe Gelhardt had a frustrating afternoon as the lone centre
forward in this system. He battled with Dion Sanderson and Kevin Long throughout.
It ultimately got to him.
In the 40th minute, as Gelhardt tried to chase a long ball
over the top, Long had hold of him and wouldn’t let him by, leading to a little
thrash out from the striker to free himself. Long looked bemused more than
anything else.
Ayling calls for calm
There has always been a tendency to leave the ball dead as
little as possible in this Leeds team since Marcelo Bielsa was in charge. In
the 48th minute, Jamie Shackleton went to take a throw-in as quickly as
possible.
However, Luke Ayling shouted at him to relax twice. The
match was fraught, chaotic and called for a moment to allow everyone to reset.
The captain read the situation.
Brady day
Tom Brady was all over every inch of Birmingham City's first
home game of the season. The legendary winner of seven Super Bowls has become a
minority investor at St Andrew's and chairman of their advisory board.
