Leeds United are reportedly close to confirming the
departure of defender Pascal Struijk with a deal agreed with Premier League
rivals Brighton.
United are gearing up for another busy summer of transfer
business as they look ahead to the new campaign, which gets underway in August.
Daniel Farke and Co. will already have an eye on their plans
for the summer transfer window, but Leeds now look set to lose one of their key
players.
The Athletic have reported that Leeds have reached a verbal
agreement with Brighton that would see Struijk swap Elland Road for the Amex
Stadium.
It has been reported that United have agreed a fee worth
£20million for Struijk to leave Leeds this summer and join Brighton, who will
be competing in the UEFA Conference League next season.
The report goes on to claim that, with Struijk’s contract at
Leeds set to expire at the end of next season, the club - who are owned by
49ers Enterprises - took the decision to allow the defender to leave the club
this summer in order to avoid losing him as a free agent in 12 months' time.
There had been uncertainty around Struijk’s future at Leeds
and whether or not the 26-year-old would sign a new contract to extend his stay
at Elland Road.
However, it seems that Struijk will be leaving West
Yorkshire after eight-and-a-half years as a Leeds player, during which time he
made 196 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Leeds are yet to make their first signing of the summer
transfer window, but may be tempted to go into the market for a new central
defender once Struijk’s departure is confirmed.
Struijk made 37 appearances for Leeds last season, with 34
coming in the Premier League, so United now face the prospect of replacing the
minutes that the Netherlands youth international leaves behind.
One deal that Leeds are close to completing is a move for
Wales international Harry Wilson, who is set to be a free agent when his
contract with Fulham expires at the end of this month.
The former Liverpool star was also linked with a move to
Aston Villa, but Leeds have won the race to sign Wilson on a free transfer to
add some valuable experience to their squad for next season.
