Harry Wilson signing coup and Leeds United transfer snowball effect following crucial deal — Leeds Live 24/6/26

Leeds United capturing Harry Wilson would be a coup, but
maybe an expected coup. It’s worth remembering that the attacker signed terms
on deadline day last summer before Fulham pulled the plug late on denying him a
switch to Elland Road.
Nevertheless, Leeds arguably had a tougher task to get him
through the door this time around. Sure, while Fulham offered him a new
contract, the Cottagers could not shield Wilson behind lock and key given his
soon-to-be-free agent status.
But other clubs were sniffing around Wilson, with mention
that some Champions League outfits were taking a look. How far they ventured is
unknown but they look to have lost out to Leeds, completed medical dependent.
Wilson is set to join a sizeable Welsh cohort at Leeds with
Joe Rodon, Daniel James and Ethan Ampadu - who recently signed a new contract -
all countrymen as is Karl Darlow, who is in renewal talks with the club.
Jayden Lienou and Charlie Crew, who have both featured in
the Wales senior squad, are also in the academy. So familiar faces might have
played a part in Wilson’s decision, with Ampadu admitting that he speaks about
Leeds to those who ask while away on international duty.
But another key factor is playing time. At 29, this Leeds
contract will be his last as a peak-age player.
“Wherever I am, it’s got to be somewhere where I’m going to
play,” Wilson said just before Christmas. At Leeds, he will be guaranteed game
time which might not be the case elsewhere.
The only way he will build on his career-best season of 10
goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League matches is by playing regularly,
which will also aid his international ambitions with a home European
Championships in two years’ time.
Ampadu will also have this in mind, and it might have been a
small factor in his decision to renew terms when looking at the big picture.
His signing on will have no doubt sent a message to Wilson.
Should Ampadu have dawdled then it is possible maybe Wilson
would have too. Tying the captain down so early was a statement move and so is
the forthcoming capture of Wilson.
If and when completed, this free deal for Wilson - in which
Leeds will not stand to lose anything regardless of how his form pans out -
sends a message to potential new signings, as Ampadu’s deal did.
The 49ers are aiming to raise the ceiling of the squad and
Wilson does that. The fact he costs nothing to acquire - amid the new finance
rules squeezing Leeds’ spending scope - means the transfer budget remains
untouched.
These are exciting times at Elland Road, which itself is
expanding its horizons quite literally.
