Patrick Bamford on the scoresheet as Joe Gelhardt nets four in 10-2 Leeds United thrashing — Leeds Press 31/7/25
by Kwadwo Hemeng
Leeds United have had some impressive results in pre-season
so far. In three games, they have failed to lose and have racked up impressive
scorelines.
Thursday was no different. While the first team is preparing
for the next friendly against Villarreal, the U21s side, with a host of first
team stars, thrashed Norweigian side Lyn 1896 10-2 in a pre-season friendly
this afternoon.
There were some surprising names on the scoresheet – Patrick
Bamford scored, Sam Greenwood netted a brace and Joe Gelhardt scored four goals
in the game. This is the second friendly the trio have featured in; they played
in the friendly against Hartlepool last weekend.
The trio did not make the trip to Germany, as Daniel Farke
has instructed them to find new clubs. Patrick Bamford was informed after a
long personal conversation with the Leeds boss. Farke then revealed this
crucial information right after the club’s first game against Manchester
United.
According to the German coach, his reasoning was based on
what has happened with Bamford over the last two seasons:
”I had a really open and honest conversation with him.
Patrick knows how much I value him as a player.
He knows how much I rate him as a person so I felt it was my
duty to have a very open and honest conversation right now straight away.
Second day of pre-season I told him he wasn’t in my plans
for the Premier League season due to the fact he had difficult years in the
last years.”
Is there any interest in the trio?
Yes, Bamford has been in the news recently. Wrexham and
Middlesbrough have shown some interest in the veteran striker. Sources at the
newly-promoted Championship side say that Leeds will have to ”help” complete a
move for the striker.
Joe Gelhardt has also attracted some interest from
Championship clubs recently. Sam Greenwood was linked with Leicester City, but
news has died down on that front.
Could any of them find their way back into Farke’s plans?
Unlike Jack Harrison who seems to have been handed a second
chance, it is very unlikely either player makes the squad for next season.
There is a reason they were left in the UK to train with the U21s.
