Brian McDermott and his playing staff are set to meet Leeds owner Massimo Cellino, with the immediate future of the club to be discussed.
Cellino ordered his employees to return to Elland Road on 28 May, however the Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that the date has been delayed until 2 June, as the Italian businessman engages with prospective buyers of Cagliari - the Serie A team that he intends to sell. The meeting will be the first face-to-face conversation between owner and manager in over a month.
McDermott has struggled to gain Cellino's backing since his arrival, and the 53-year old has had to continue doing his job whilst rumours of his sacking have circled the club. The Englishman was reportedly asked to leave the club before Cellino officialy took control, although that decision was reversed days later. However, it has been apparent that Cellino does not see the future of Leeds United as containing McDermott, and has slowly been appointing his own staff into positions of power - Benito Carbone being the most recent.
Cellino has also done little to display confidence in the English coach, vocalising his opinion on McDermott's personal life; having only returned to England to care for his sick mother, McDermott was chastised for not returning when Cellino ordered.
For all his apparent dislike of McDermott, the coach has two years remaining on his contract, and his dismissal would cost Cellino roughly £1.5 million.
However, the arranged meeting is set to clear the air regarding McDermott's position, as well as the paying of player contracts and the starting date for 2014 pre-season.
The PFA are aware of the situation, and are in touch with the players concerning the early return to Elland Road, with the contracted five weeks of required holiday still not completed.
Quoted in the same article, Cellino said: “I need everyone back here, the players, the manager. I need to speak to them. They are on holiday but we need to work for next season.”
Despite not knowing what the meeting will bring for those involved at Leeds United, fans can be grateful for Cellino's proactive methods.
