Sonny Perkins at Leeds United: How’s it been going? Have they agreed compensation with West Ham yet? Is he close to the first-team? - Leeds All Over 13/10/22

Leeds United striker Sonny Perkins is really enjoying his start to life at Elland Road, after leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

Leeds’ youth investment has rolled on this summer with further shrewd signings made to strengthen the under-21s setup.

It saw Darko Gyabi and Sonny Perkins arrive from Manchester City and West Ham respectively, with the latter starting life incredibly well with his new club.

The overall aim for Perkins and co is to make their way into the first team in the near future, and he hasn’t harmed his chances right now with his superb form.

Here, we look at Perkins’ displays so far and everything we know about his start at Leeds…

How’s he playing?

Perkins has been one of the shining lights of the under-21s side so far as they sit top of the PL2 Division 2 table unbeaten and winning all but one game this season.

The England youth international’s goalscoring form has been sensational, scoring in every game he’s been involved in for club and country up until the Sunderland win this week where he fired his first blank.

Eight goals this season for the under-21s inn as many appearances were backed up by five goals and an assist during three England under-19s outings – his first at that age level.

Perkins was also named the PL2 Player of the Month for August:

Have Leeds agreed compensation with West Ham?

It has not yet been confirmed what Leeds are due to pay the Irons for signing the forward, with his former club due compensation having offered him a contract, which he turned down.

A benchmark for a similar deal was Harvey Elliott moving from Fulham to Liverpool, costing the Reds £4.3million – per The Guardian.

However, Leeds are not expected to pay that much to sign Perkins.

Is he close to first-team football?

Perkins’ start at Leeds has proven that he, like many of his teammates in the 21s, is far too good to be playing PL2 Division 2 football.

His form will surely be impressing Jesse Marsch, but there are a number of players that will be thinking they need to be in the senior fold too.

Mateo Joseph’s form is also worth considering, while Joe Gelhardt’s non-inclusion from the squad against Aston Villa recently suggests it’s a tougher battle for involvement than first perceived since the start of the season.
