Joe Rothwell: Confidence is really high — Leedsunited.com 19/2/25
Midfielder gave his post-match thoughts to LUTV.
Leeds United claimed all three points against Sunderland in
the dying stages on Monday evening, with Pascal Struijk heading in the winner
deep into injury time.
Instrumental in the victory over the Black Cats was Joe
Rothwell, who provided assists for both goals late on in an impressive display
off the bench for Daniel Farke’s side.
Reflecting on the dramatic win, the midfielder gave an
insight into how he felt the match unfolded, as well as describing the morale
amongst the squad.
“The way the game was panning out, we knew there would be
opportunities but there is no better way to win it than with the last kick of
the game,” Rothwell told LUTV.
“I knew that if I got an opportunity today, I would have to
come on and do something. Thankfully, I managed to do that and set up two
goals!
“We knew we had them camped in their half for most of the
game, so it was more about executing that last little final pass.
“It is what it is all about. You can see how much it meant
to us out there and you can see how much it meant to the fans as well. It gives
us a good building block now to go into another massive game on Monday.
“The spirit is huge. It can take a team a long way. We had a
bit of an unlucky one at their place so it was nice to be on the right end of
one this time. We have had a couple of last-gasp winners but this one
definitely felt the sweetest.
“Confidence is really high. We just take each game as it
comes. Winning only breeds confidence and obviously the more we can do that,
the more confidence everyone is going to get.
