Elland Road witnessed some feisty scenes after trouble spilt
into the tunnels as Leeds United beat Sunderland.
The Whites hosted the Black Cats at home in the Championship
on Monday (17 February) in what ended up being a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Pascal Struijk was the hero at Elland Road, scoring a
stoppage-time winner to send the Peacocks back to the top of the league table.
Wilson Isidor gave Sunderland the lead in the first half and
got into a heated moment with Joe Rodon just before the break, and it never
simmered after that.
Players had to be separated in the tunnel by staff and
officials after a heated end to the first half at Elland Road, according to
David Coverdale.
The journalist revealed there was drama in West Yorkshire
after the opening 45 minutes, with Isidor booked for squaring up to Rodon just
before.
The 24-year-old forward was a constant menace in the first
half and angered the home fans with a prolonged celebration after his goal.
Coverdale wrote in the print edition of the Daily Mail (18
February, Page 58): “In a feisty end to the half, villain-of-the-piece Isidor
was booked for squaring up to Rodon with his head, then trouble spilled into
the tunnel with players having to be separated by staff and officials.”
Elland Road a fortress in the Championship
Elland Road has been a fortress for Leeds in the
Championship, as they’ve lost just once at home this season.
Fans have seen their team score 44 goals at home and
conceded just eight, which has contributed to them being at the top of the
table.
Daniel Farke has managed to bring out the best in his
players, and it looks like the German manager will finally achieve his goals in
the current campaign.
Elland Road wants promotion to the Premier League after
barely missing out last season as the Whites lost to Southampton in the
play-offs final.
Farke has a reliable goalscorer in Joel Piroe to fire the
Peacocks back into the English top flight.
The West Yorkshire outfit will evidently need to reinforce
their squad in the summer, though, if they win promotion, considering how teams
like Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester have fared recently.
Marcelo Bielsa had turned the Whites into a team every top
side in the Premier League didn’t fancy going up against due to their
relentlessness.
It will be interesting to see what Farke’s approach will be,
but first, he needs to ensure the Peacocks don’t slip up in the coming months.
