Chris Wilder was waiting in the tunnel for Daniel Farke
after Leeds United secured a massive three points at Bramall Lane.
Leeds took a huge step towards the Premier League with a 3-1
win against Sheffield United on Monday night, increasing their advantage at the
summit of the Championship to five points.
The win was almost identical to the one against Sunderland,
with the Whites finding themselves 1-0 down before two headed goals in the
final 20 minutes flipped the game on its head.
Joel Piroe added his 15th goal of the season in added time,
making sure Leeds picked up all three points in what may have been the game to
decide the title winner.
Wilder waits for Farke after Leeds v Sheffield United
With just two points separating the teams at the start of
the game, Wilder will have been fully aware of the magnitude of the clash,
while also being wary of the threat posed by Leeds.
It was that threat that defined the result of the game, with
Wilder perhaps unexpectedly humble after.
As quoted by Beren Cross (24 February), Farke said: “Chris
waited in the tunnel to congratulate every one of my members of staff. Top
quality person and the best manager Sheffield United could have at the moment.”
Wilder could have easily headed straight back to the
dressing room but instead opted to show his class and respect to this Leeds
United team.
Farke’s side were certainly deserving of all three points,
but Sheffield United will take plenty of heart from the fact they gave Leeds
one of their toughest encounters yet.
Leeds set for Premier League campaign
While promotion isn’t sealed yet, the win at Sheffield
United significantly boosted their chances and at this stage in the season,
it’s hard to envisage any other scenario.
Leeds have been outstanding all campaign, but especially
since the turn of the year and it is impossible to argue against their title
credentials.
A few more wins will be enough to secure promotion, with the
race for the title likely to go down to the final few games of the season.
However, with a five-point gap now present, success is very
much in the hands of the Whites who will be looking to finish the season with
as many points as possible.
