Sheffield United have leapfrogged Leeds United into first
place in the Championship table after Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win over Luton Town
away from home, with Leeds playing on Monday.
On Tuesday night, Leeds went four points clear of Sheffield
United with a massive 4-0 win at Watford but since then, Chris Wilder’s side
have played twice. Firstly, beating Middlesbrough 3-1 at Bramall Lane.
With Leeds hosting Sunderland on Monday, both Sheffield
United and Burnley played on Saturday. Firstly, Burnley dropped points against
Preston with Paul Heckingbottom doing Leeds a favour, a 0-0 draw.
Sheffield United though, secured a 1-0 win over Luton thanks
to Anel Ahmedhodzic’s late goal against Luton Town. A narrow win in which
Wilder’s men had to withstand heavy pressure during the first half.
Wilder cannot seem to stop talking about Leeds at the
moment. Mind games earlier in the week, Wilder said that Leeds’ upcoming clash
will not define his side’s season. On Saturday, he discussed Leeds again.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star after his side’s late win at
Luton, Wilder was asked if the win will now put pressure on Leeds when they
face Sunderland. He responded by saying simply, that it won’t affect Leeds.
“Nah, they [Leeds] don’t need pressure. They’ve handled it
all the way through. Have to keep our heads down and concentrate. Any team that
wants to be successful has to go through days like today,” he said.
How does the Championship table look as Leeds face
Sunderland
Leeds now sit in second place but of course, with a game in
hand over Sheffield United and Burnley. While Leeds will want to go up as
champions and secure Daniel Farke’s third title, second place will do.
Sheffield United might have won but importantly for Leeds, Burnley could only manage a 0-0 draw and that now gives The Whites – and Sunderland – a big chance to take advantage on Monday at Elland Road.
The next eight days are crucial for Leeds. Sunderland on Monday night and then a week later, again on Monday night, Leeds go to Sheffield United. Two games that could determine the top two, or play-offs.
