“Concrete” – Rangers star revealed he agreed terms to join Leeds United before 2023 transfer — Leeds All Over 16/10/23

Rangers attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell has revealed that he was very close to joining Leeds United in January 2023 instead of the Ibrox side.

The Whites were busy back in January as a Premier League side, attempting to bring in signings that would revitalise their season under Jesse Marsch.

Marsch only lasted a matter of days following the closure of the transfer window, meaning the signings he made were eventually futile, as Leeds ended up being relegated with two more managers following before the end of the season.

A former favourite of Daniel Farke’s was on the radar at Elland Road during that January window, it has now been revealed.

Rangers attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell has shared that before he moved north of the border to the Glasgow outfit, he had agreed personal terms to join the Whites.

Cantwell spent the second half of the 21/22 season on loan at Bournemouth, with his Norwich future seemingly up in the air as Farke left, leaving it a matter of time before a transfer materialised.

Speaking on The Beautiful Game Podcast, he said:

“It was close and it was concrete but that’s something I won’t go into the details of. There’s a lot of people that still work within these clubs and you never know when your paths are going to cross.

“For whatever reason they didn’t come to an agreement. It wasn’t to do with me, it was to do with the clubs. The conversations were real and the interest was definitely real though.”

The timescale of Cantwell agreeing Leeds terms isn’t shared, but it would seem that Victor Orta had renewed interest in the attacker, having been linked with Leeds in previous windows too.

Cantwell was seriously out of favour at Norwich last season and he needed that move away, and Rangers looks like a good way for him to start fresh.

Him joining Leeds might not have been fun for six months on the way to relegation but being joined by Farke would have seriously helped him.

He played his best football under the German and his style as an attacker is something that we could do with.
