Leeds United appoint Neil Redfearn as head coach on 12-month deal
Guardian 1/11/14
Leeds United have announced the appointment of Neil Redfearn as the club’s head coach on a rolling 12-month contract.
The club’s former academy head had been widely tipped to replace previous incumbent Darko Milanic, who was in charge for just 32 days, and this permanent appointment follows three separate stints as caretaker manager at Elland Road for the former Barnsley player. During his third, earlier this season, Leeds won three and drew one of four games.
The 49-year-old’s new role was confirmed on Saturday afternoon via the club’s Twitter feed, which said: “Leeds can confirm the announcement of Neil Redfearn as the club’s head coach.
“Redfearn has signed a 12-month rolling contract with the option of a further year or returning to the academy.”
Redfearn, who originally joined Leeds as under-18s manager in January 2009, is a popular figure among the club’s support and, as its fourth manager of the Italian Massimo Cellino’s nine-month spell in charge, will hope he is given time to improve the fortunes of a team that currently sits 18th in the second tier.
Brian McDermott, Dave Hockaday and Milanic have already managed the team during Cellino’s tenure. Redfearn’s first match in charge ended in a 3-1 defeat away to Cardiff City.
