Leeds United: Barnes set to choose Burnley over Whites

LEEDS United’s hopes of signing Ashley Barnes were diminishing last night after the Brighton striker passed a medical and agreed personal terms with Burnley.
The 24-year-old – a prime target of Leeds manager Brian McDermott – looked set to complete a transfer to Turf Moor today despite United’s efforts to force through a move to Elland Road.
Burnley negotiated a fee for Barnes on Wednesday and he underwent a medical yesterday. He and Burnley are understood to have finalised the details of his contract. Barnes, who will cost close to £1m, was seen by Leeds as an ideal partner for Ross McCormack, their 18-goal Scotland international.
Asked about the Brighton forward yesterday, McDermott said: “We have an interest. Another club are talking to him but we have an interest in this stage.”
Burnley boss Sean Dyche said: “Ashley is having a medical and so long as that goes well we look forward to him hopefully signing. The two clubs have certainly agreed on things.”
Barnes has been heavily involved in Brighton’s Championship season, playing 24 times and scoring six goals.
He is out of contract in the summer, however, and has so far refused the offer of a new deal.
