United manager gives his verdict on Saturday’s defeat…
United manager Brian McDermott described Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday as a public humiliation.
The boss described the game at Hillsborough as ‘horrendous’ and the result was United’s biggest margin loss in a league game for over 50 years.
“We need to forget the FA Cup game, Saturday was horrendous,” he said. “It was a public humiliation.
“We had a terrible day in a derby game in front of the TV cameras. It doesn’t get worse than that.
“There was a lack of a lot of things on Saturday. There was no fight, determination or desire.
“There were individual errors and we were getting punished left, right and centre."
At the interval the manager brought Matt Smith on to add to this attacking threat but the striker received a straight red card within the opening minutes. The boss feels the decision cost his side dearly.
The United manager is now looking to move on and already has his sights set on the next game which is Leicester City at Elland Road this coming Saturday.
“I think that it would have made a difference if we had kept him on the pitch,” said the boss. “But he obviously didn’t stay on the pitch.
“I spoke to Lee Probert, the referee, and said that it was never a sending off. You’d be sending people off all the time if that’s a sending off.
“All we can do now is move on and look ahead to the next game, which is Leicester. I’m glad that it’s Leicester coming to Elland Road.”
McDermott has vowed to go back to basics in the wake of Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
The manager says that he will take his team right back to the beginning as he prepares to face Leicester City, who currently sit top of the Championship table.
Saturday’s game at Hillsborough saw United start with the 3-4-3 formation that was in evidence at Rochdale.
“The formation didn’t work,” said the boss. “You are trying to find a way of playing that wasn’t so drastically away from what we have been playing and what we have been doing.
“It will be right back to basics now with this team.
“We have to go back to basics to work our socks off to get to where we need to get to.
“We need to fight, we need to do whatever we have to do now."
The manager admits that the coming weeks are important for United and will pick a team that is willing to fight and compete when Leicester City visit Elland Road on Saturday (12:15pm).
“We’ll see in the coming weeks how deep rooted the problems are,” added the manager.
“We’ll get a major reaction from that game on Saturday, we know that.
“Sometimes you just have to go right back to basics after you’ve hit rock bottom. That game was probably as close to rock bottom as you are going to get as a Leeds United manager.
“We have to find a team next week that wants to fight, that’s got desire and has the bravery to get on the ball and compete.”
