Leeds United: McCormack proud to be named club’s new captain

Ross McCormack was last night handed the captain’s armband at Leeds United with manager Brian McDermott saying: “He’s the right man for the job.”
McCormack has replaced Rodolph Austin as skipper in a forthright response by McDermott to last Saturday’s 6-0 drubbing at Sheffield Wednesday.
Austin captained United throughout the first half of the season but agreed to make way for McCormack ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Leicester City at Elland Road. McCormack has been an influential figure this term, scoring 18 times and helping the club climb into a play-off position before Christmas.
But United have slipped down the league after four successive losses, the last a humiliating derby defeat at Hillsborough, and McCormack stood out as the obvious option for McDermott as he looked to replace Austin.
McDermott said: “Ross will be captain. I spoke to him back in April and I said then that I needed leaders. He’s a leader.
“Whether he saw himself as a leader at that time I wouldn’t know but I’ve always seen him as a talisman type. He’s matured a lot and everyone knows what this club means to him. From the team’s point of view, he’s the right man. He’s shown leadership qualities with his performances and the way he’s spoken this week.”
McCormack tweeted: “Absolutely delighted to be the captain of Leeds United. Really looking forward to it. A proud day for myself and my family.”
