Leeds United Elland Road expansion latest: New image shared, mass transit agreement & Government backing — YEP 17/5/26
By Kyle Newbould
Work on Elland Road can start to really kick on following
Leeds United’s final home game of the season against Brighton on Sunday.
The Whites ended their 2025/26 home campaign on a high, with
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a 95th-minute winner to defeat their Champions
League-chasing opponents. Daniel Farke’s side defended with their lives and
were met with a joyous atmosphere for their post-match lap of honour.
With Leeds not due back playing at Elland Road until August,
development can now continue without interruption with signs work is already
underway - like scaffolding on the West Stand. It’s an exciting time for the
entire area and the YEP has rounded up some of the latest stadium expansion
news below.
Earlier this weekend, our sister site the Yorkshire Post
shared a brand new computer-generated image (CGI) of an expanded Elland Road
with the capacity set to increase from 37,645 to a huge 53,000. The image was
shared by the Lowy Family Group, the club’s development partner, run by Leeds
United director Peter Lowy.
Leeds are hoping to complete the project by 2030 and this
most recent image provides an exciting insight into how Elland Road and the
surrounding area could look, complete with tram links. There are also expected
to be around 2,500 new homes plus hotels, cafes, shops and community facilities
as the Lowy Family Group commits to redeveloping the entire area.
As for the actual stadium, work on the West Stand is
expected to be completed in 2028 with a capacity increase from 8,000 to 17,750.
The North Stand’s expansion is set to take a further two years, increasing from
a maximum capacity of 10,414 to 15,300.
Mass transit agreement
The Yorkshire Post have also reported on a fresh agreement
to bring mass transit to Elland Road and the city of Leeds. The Lowy Family
Group, Leeds City Council and Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin’s West
Yorkshire Combined Authority are reportedly due to sign the Memorandum of
Understanding on Tuesday.
Peter Lowy, a principal at Lowy Family Group and a Leeds
United director, said: “The stadium redevelopment is an important catalyst for
the wider regeneration opportunity around Elland Road, creating the potential
for new homes, jobs, public spaces and long-term investment in Leeds. Mass
transit connectivity is fundamental to unlocking that future potential and
supporting the continued growth of both the club and the city.”
And in a post on X, Ms Brabin wrote: “Leeds United are
staying up. And the transformation of Elland Road and the area around it is the
most shovel-ready sports-led regeneration project in the country. Working with
the Lowy Family Group and @LeedsCC_News, we're going to build over 2,500 homes
and a vibrant, year-round destination that fans and families can be proud of.”
Leeds have also received government backing for their
project with Chancellor Rachel Reeves singling out the Elland Road expansion
plans in an announcement over the North of England potentially hosting an
Olympic Games in the 2040s. Ms Reeves confirmed the setting up of a Stadium
Regeneration Accelerator, designed to help with stadium expansion plans.
The Chancellor said: “Britain’s sporting prowess is
recognised and respected around the world. It’s something we are determined to
capitalise on to breathe life into our communities and build a stronger and
more secure economy.
“That’s why we’re throwing our full support behind bringing
the Games back home which will boost our Northern Growth Corridor. It’s also
why we’re backing stadium regeneration plans, like at Elland Road, to deliver
new homes, business opportunities and public spaces in Leeds and beyond.”
