Joe Gelhardt posts five-word reaction to latest Leeds news coming out of Elland Road - Leeds United News 31/8/23

Sam Greenwood has completed a season-long loan move from Leeds United to Middlesbrough despite coming off the bench for Leeds on Tuesday – and Joe Gelhardt has reacted with a post on Instagram.

Greenwood, 21, has returned to the North East. Having come through the Sunderland academy, moving to Arsenal and then a £3m transfer to Leeds in 2020. He has since played 35 times at senior level for us.

Relegation was obviously a blow, but for some Leeds players it might have actually helped them. Charlie Cresswell, Archie Gray, Cree Summerville, Georginio Rutter – they have all come into the starting eleven.

Greenwood was seen in that category – having shown glimpses but rarely trusted with a start in the top tier. Daniel Farke has not seen it that way, deciding to let Greenwood go on loan – joining Middlesbrough.

It sees the playmaker go back to the North East – almost full circle, joining Sunderland’s rivals in Boro. He will actually face the Black Cats this season. Gelhardt, his best mate, reacted with a five-word post.

Good Luck Smash it Lad

What a signing for Middlesbrough. Leeds have potentially just strengthened one of the clubs expected to be up there challenging for promotion. On two fronts, Leeds are weakened by Greenwood leaving.

But if Greenwood is going, one would expect that perhaps there is a new signing set to arrive at Elland Road in the no.10 role. Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley have been linked – but neither seem very likely.

Hopefully, Greenwood impresses and he returns to Leeds next season with renewed confidence and the ability to go and have a real impact on this Leeds side. Gelhardt may end up following Greenwood.
