Eighteen-year-old Italian international forward Gnonto
sealed a move to Leeds in the final throes of the summer window’s transfer
deadline day in signing from FC Zurich for 4.5m euros on a five-year-deal.
After five outings for United’s under-21s, the teenager finally made his first
team debut in last weekend’s Premier League clash at Liverpool when replacing
Jack Harrison as a 72nd-minute substitute on the left wing. The Italian created
the winning goal for Crysencio Summerville just 17 minutes later and a thrilled
Gnonto hopes his Anfield impact was a sign of things to come ahead of this
weekend’s hosting of Bournemouth. Asked if he had enjoyed his first taste of
the Whites first team by LUTV, Gnonto beamed: "Of course. I am very happy.
This was my debut and we also won. I think this is the most important. I am
very happy for me, for the team, for everyone here and I hope this is just the
first of many."
Gnonto’s next opportunity could present itself in Saturday
afternoon’s Premier League hosting of Bournemouth which marks United’s final
home game before the World Cup break. Three days after his Whites debut at
Anfield, Gnonto was also in action this midweek when starting for United’s
under-21s in their Papa John’s Trophy clash at Crewe Alexandra which ended in a
goalless draw and exit from the competition before defeat on penalties. Gnonto
played 62 minutes, hot on the heels of an 18-minute stint at Anfield that he
will live long in the memory.
"It was really nice,” said Gnonto of stepping out for
the Whites at Liverpool’s famous home. “Of course Anfield is one of the best
stadiums in the world I can say. It's something I have always dreamed of and
I'm just very happy and very proud."
