JESSE MARSCH: WE HAVE TO KEEP PUSHING - Leedsunited.com 6/11/22
Jesse Marsch saw his side fight back from 1-3 down to win at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, with Crysencio Summerville scoring a late winner for the second week running.
The Whites took an early lead in the match after Rodrigo’s
penalty, but found themselves 3-1 behind with just 30 minutes left to play.
The substitutes made huge impacts from the bench, meaning
the Whites were able to turn the game around and secure a memorable victory
along with an important three points.
Speaking after the match, Marsch gave his thoughts to the
media.
He said: “It’s hard to put into words and to describe what
happened.
“At half-time, we tried to instil belief in the team, that
we could still manage to find the result.
“I told them after the match that the best part was that I
could tell by the looks on their faces, that I didn’t have to convince them
that they believed it.
“I think the second half performance exemplified that.
“I think the guys who came on played really well. Sam
[Greenwood] got a really good goal and I thought he was fantastic in the match.
“Then Willy [Gnonto] continues to grow within our group.
People see that he has talent and quality, but also real intelligence on the
pitch. He helped the game as well - and I thought Joffy [Joe Gelhardt] came on
and did really well as well.
“We have a big cup match coming up midweek, then we go to
Tottenham and we want to go after that game, too.
“We’re not thinking we are done - it’s two big results [AFC Bournemouth & Liverpool], the six points helps us a lot, but we have got to keep pushing.”
Liam Cooper gave his reaction to an ‘unbelievable’ win at
home to AFC Bournemouth, where his side came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 late in
the match, after scoring an important goal himself to level the scores.
The skipper was full of praise for the side, but has now challenged
them to keep going after securing back to back victories in the Premier League.
“It was unbelievable,” Cooper said, after the match.
“We were in the ascendency again, then gave it away. You
could feel the frustration in the ground, but as a group we keep going and keep
going.
“We pushed and we pushed, then we’ve scored a lot of good
goals, the dressing room is buzzing, we’re delighted with that.
“We have got to keep pushing, we know we have got a long way
to go and that will be the message to the boys, we’ll keep going.
“We’ll enjoy this win with our fans, then we’ll go again.
It’s a great result for us, it’s back to back wins which is difficult in this
league.”
The captain was asked about the younger players in the
squad, who all made an impact in Saturday’s victory whether they started or
came on in the match.
He said: “All the boys off the bench came on and got stuck
in, they gave us a real driving force going forward.
“Willy, Sam, Joffy, all the boys who came on were
unbelievable and they can be proud of themselves today.
“Then, we see it day in day out with Cry [Summerville] in
training, Jesse has just been waiting for the chance to put him in, and he’s
been unbelievable.
“He has got to keep pushing, keep striving to be better,
we’ll look after him. He’s going to have an unbelievable career and we’re
delighted to have him here.”
