The Boot Room 6/7/21 Barcelona confirm clause included as Leeds complete signing of Junior Firpo
By Will Butcher
Barcelona have confirmed in a statement on their website
that a clause has been included in a deal that takes Junior Firpo to Leeds
United. The left-back has signed a four-year contract with Marcelo Bielsa’s
men. Barca took to their website to confirm that a sell-on clause is included.
Firpo, 24, has decided to leave Barcelona after managing
just 41 appearances in two seasons. The Dominican Republic international is
said to have had the choice of joining AC Milan on loan. But Firpo chose to
make the permanent switch to Leeds under Bielsa.
He has chosen the latter, penning a four-year deal until the
summer of 2025. A fee is in the region of £13.5million, and he will wear the
number three shirt – recently vacated by Barry Douglas, who is on his way to
Lech Poznan. Leeds confirmed the news with a video on Twitter.
What is the clause in the deal that sees Leeds sign Firpo
from Barcelona?
Barcelona claim in a statement on their official website
that a clause is in the deal, representing 20% of his next move will go to
Barcelona. Normally, it is a percentage of the profit. But in Firpo’s case, his
next move will see Leeds only receive 80% – and Barca the remaining fifth.
Of course, that means that if Leeds sold him in the future
for £25million, £5million would go to Barcelona. It is quite a hefty clause in
included but given that Leeds have signed Firpo for £13.5million and add-ons –
it represents a good deal. Victor Orta strikes again.
