Leeds United are lining up an offer for Reading utility man Royston Drenthe, football] direct news understands.
A source close to Elland Road told FDN new owner Massimo Cellino is anxious to invest in the playing squad and is aware that changes are needed if they are to launch a serious bid for promotion back to the top flight.
Leeds missed out on a play-off spot last term after a torrid run of form following the turn of the year, and the second half of the campaign was overshadowed by Cellino’s long-running pursuit of the Championship club.
The club insider revealed former Everton and Real Madrid man Drenthe, who is capable of operating at left-back or further forward on the flank, has been identified as a priority acquisition for the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old, who started his professional career with Feyenoord in his homeland after coming through the academy, went on to spend five years at the Bernabeu and was relatively successful during his temporary stint with the Toffees.
He joined Reading from Russian club Alania in the summer of 2013 and has 12 months remaining on his contract with the Royals, who also failed to gain promotion last season.
