Assistant manager looking for back-to-back wins on Saturday…
Assistant manager Nigel Gibbs is calling on the United side to find some consistency ahead of the weekend trip to Charlton.
United head for The Valley looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season and are searching for a first win away since Bolton were beaten 1-0 in September.
The assistant manager says that spirits have been high in training following the 2-0 defeat of Yeovil Town and the team are now looking to follow that up.
“That is what we have spoken about all season,” he said. “Getting that consistency with our home and away performances.
“We haven’t quite got there yet but the boys are working really hard, and coming off the win on Saturday the last couple of days have been good in training.
“With this division you can jump up the league with a couple of back-to-back results. We knew that if we got a good result last Saturday that we would jump up a few places and with other results as they are we jumped up to eighth.
“We are now three points behind the Play-Offs which is very pleasing.
“I think that the big thing with us and the players is that we think we can still step up another level and keep on the tails of those boys in the Play-Offs. Hopefully we can work our way into it, that’s our goal.”
United’s away form has become something of a concern in recent weeks and Nigel says that the team need to perform similar to the way that has seen back-to-back victories at Elland Road in recent weeks.
“We need the same performances as our home form,” said Nigel. “The same energy, chance creation rate and we need to be more solid.
“That is the information we have passed onto the players. When we got back to 2-2 at Huddersfield we were still quite open and we were looking for the winner too early.
“We’ve got to use a little bit of nous and keep working at the game, closing down the opposition and make ourselves hard to beat because we know that with the players we have in the side we will create chances.
“We certainly need to be more resilient away from home.”
United head to Charlton Athletic on Saturday before the third international break of the season. The Addicks currently lie in 17th position in the Sky Bet Championship with 14 points but are on a five-game unbeaten run.
“I think they are five games without a defeat so they are on a good run at the moment,” said Nigel.
“They had a good away win at Birmingham, which is never an easy place to go. It is going to be another tough game.
“Hopefully we are developing as a side, as a team and we can go there and get the right result.
“It is another period of preparation and rest before the next run of games. You always like to finish off with the right result before an international break and that’s what we will be looking to do.”
