Leeds United have denied Sheffield United permission to play Aidan White in the FA Cup – offering the on-loan defender fresh hope of a future at Elland Road.
Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough asked to use White in his club’s first-round game at Colchester tomorrow but Brian McDermott rejected a request which would have cup-tied the 22-year-old for later stages of the competition.
The Leeds boss sent White on loan to Bramall Lane until the turn of the year last week with United’s academy product largely uninvolved at Elland Road this season.
He is due to return to West Yorkshire on January 1 and Leeds will enter the FA Cup at the third-round stage the following weekend.
McDermott said: “You protect your club first and foremost. You always do that and that’s the only thing you think about.
“Obviously we want Aidy to be playing games but he’d appreciate our thinking I’m sure.”
Clough admitted on Wednesday that he could look to sign White on a permanent basis at the end of his temporary deal.
McDermott said: “I’m sure Nigel will ring me if he wants to do anything. That hasn’t been the case.”
