JAMIE ASHDOWN’S 2013 nightmare has continued with the Leeds United reserve keeper facing a further extended spell on the sidelines following toe surgery.
The 32-year-old, whose last start for United came in the 4-0 FA Cup exit at Manchester City in February, has struggled with a toe problem since undergoing an operation in April – and has now gone under the knife again in a bid to rectify the problem.
The upshot is that Doncaster-born Alex Cairns will continue to deputise for first-choice keeper Paddy Kenny.
Ashdown, who has made eight appearances for the club – but is yet to make his bow in the league – signed for United in June 2012, arriving on the same day as Rodolph Austin, Luke Varney and Andy Gray.
Meanwhile, Stephen Warnock is winning his race to be fit for the home clash with Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough tomorrow week.
Warnock missed the 4-2 win at Charlton last Saturday after coming off just before half-time in the previous weekend’s 2-0 victory over Yeovil at Elland Road. The former Aston Villa and Liverpool full-back left the ground with a cast on his foot following a heavy challenge.
Teenage midfielder Alex Mowatt, who missed the Charlton victory with a groin strain which forced the club to withdraw him from the England U19 squad who played in Hungary in a friendly yesterday, should also be back in contention for the visit of Boro.
United are sweating on the fitness of Scott Wootton, who suffered an ankle injury sustained in the success at The Valley.
United are hoping the clash with Boro will attract a crowd of 30,000 with a big contingent expected from Teesside for Karanka’s first match in charge.
