The friendly trip to Shelbourne was arranged to give extra game time to some of Brian McDermott's squad, and the first half saw a real quality display across the park.
Skipper Rudy Austin took the individual plaudits for his efforts in the middle of the park, both with the quality of his passing and the ease in which he broke up play and protected the back four.
That said, there were good efforts everywhere. Zac Thompson delivered some great balls for Matt Smith, youngsters Alex Mowatt and Chris Dawson showed real promise, and the back four were assured.
There were also first half goals for Noel Hunt, who delivered a great finish after latching on to a long pass from Austin, and for Ryan Hall, playing just behind in a central role, who showed good feet to turn and finish.
The second half started in similar vein to the first with United assuming a tight grip on proceedings.
Smith was thwarted after a good ball in by Drury and Dawson tried his luck with a stinging shot, but it was 3-0 before the hour when Ross Killock headed home after a corner was returned back into the box.
Hunt was withdrawn after an hour, but his replacement Lewis Walters looked to cause problems and United's dominance continued. The home keeper had to avert the danger of Smith once again, and Shelbourne made a couple of important blocks.
But a fourth goal did come when Hall latched onto a good ball forward and delivered a great finish over the keeper.
Thompson almost got his name on the scoresheet, but fired over, and Hall sent one wide in the dying moments as United cruised to an emphatic victory against the Irish side.
