Brian McDermott has confirmed that Leeds United and Davide Somma have effectively parted company following the club’s decision not to offer the striker a new contract.
Somma, whose deal at Elland Road expired last month, was invited to train with Leeds during the close season in an attempt to restore his fitness after a spate of injuries.
But McDermott is unaware of Somma’s whereabouts and believes the South African forward is looking for another club having reached the end of the line at Leeds.
United’s manager appeared to keep the door ajar for Somma by giving the 28-year-old the opportunity to work at Thorp Arch in pre-season, though McDermott admitted that Leeds were still unlikely to consider handing him a new deal.
Speaking last night, McDermott said: “I haven’t seen Davide at all so I think he’s sorting himself out.”
Somma enjoyed one impressive season at Elland Road, scoring 12 times during the 2010-11 term, but a succession of knee injuries limited him to six appearances in the past two years.
