McDermott says he’s not frightened to swing the axe

Leeds United manager Brian McDermott insisted today that he would show no sentiment when it came to trimming players from his first-team squad.
The Leeds boss is awaiting approaches for his fringe professionals after committing himself to helping fund incoming deals by negotiating transfers out of Elland Road.
McDermott has already sanctioned striker Steve Morison’s season-long loan to Millwall, saving around £12,000 a week in wages and assisting in financing the arrival of Noel Hunt and the £1million purchase of Luke Murphy from Crewe Alexandra.
But he confirmed that other players would be allowed to move on from Elland Road to aid the recruitment drive which has seen three new signings to date and could bring another four to Leeds before the Championship season starts on August 3.
Danny Pugh – sent on loan to Sheffield Wednesday last season – has been on the transfer list for more than 12 months and the deals completed by United in the past year have left an excess of midfielders at Elland Road.
McDermott said: “I’m not saying anyone’s surplus as such but sometimes you might have an overload in one position and you make a decision to let a person go. That’s how it is.
“I’ve got no problem with making those decisions. It’s not so much who’s surplus; it’s more about looking at the kind of deals we can do and whether they suits us.”
McDermott performed a large clear-out at the beginning of May by releasing six senior players, including striker Davide Somma.
