Leeds United 4 Augsburg 0: Tarik Muharemovic wondergoal provides perfect end to Whites pre-season — YEP 15/8/26
By Kyle Newbould
Leeds United maintained their impressive pre-season form a
week before the 2026/27 Premier League season kicks off at Nottingham Forest.
Leeds United rounded off their pre-season campaign with a
commanding 4-0 win at home to FC Augsburg on Saturday.
An action-packed first-half brought goals from Anton Stach,
Tarik Muharemovic and James Justin with substitute Lukas Nmecha netting a
fourth late on. Victory means they head to Nottingham Forest next weekend off
the back of four wins from six summer friendlies.
Daniel Farke named his strongest available starting-XI in a
hint at how things could look at the City Ground next weekend. James Trafford
got his first Elland Road start while Ethan Ampadu and Stach returned in
midfield. Harry Wilson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also started.
Leeds needed 50 seconds to open the scoring, Brenden
Aaronson finding Stach whose deflected effort squeezed beyond Finn Dahmen from
a tight angle on the left of the penalty area. The chance came from a long
Trafford ball with Calvert-Lewin and Wilson also involved in the build-up.
Calvert-Lewin forced a good stop from Dahmen in the 11th
minute after meeting Justin’s cross six yards out and dead-centre, only to see
his header tipped over. Stach then saw a similar effort to his goal saved as
Leeds dominated the opening quarter of an hour.
Muharemovic was the man to make it 2-0 inside 19 minutes,
and in spectacular fashion. The Bosnian centre-back’s first Leeds goal was a
close-range bicycle kick which crashed into the top of the net after a long
Ampadu throw-in caused problems for the Augsburg defenders.
Justin then made it three before the half-hour mark,
bouncing passes off Ampadu and Calvert-Lewin before a great touch took him
through on goal. And the stand-in left wing-back had the finish to match,
rolling beyond Dahmen and into the bottom right corner.
Calvert-Lewin almost had a chance early in the second-half
and like a few times in recent weeks, it was Rodon bursting forward at
right-wing only to see his cross cut out. A much quieter second-half played out
with Aaronson the next to have a chance on 62 minutes but an Augsburg defender
got a foot in before the American could shoot from close-range.
Farke made four changes on 68 minutes with Sean Longstaff,
Daniel James, Noah Okafor and Nmecha replacing Jaka Bijol, Stach, Wilson and
Calvert-Lewin. The substitutions also saw Leeds switch formation, moving to a
back-four with Aaronson in the No.10 role of a 4-2-3-1.
Two more changes on 76 minutes gave Joel Piroe and Ao Tanaka
a chance to get minutes, the pair replacing Aaronson and Ampadu. The latter
substitute slipped a great ball through to Nmecha in the 82nd minute, with the
striker showing great composure to dink his effort over the goalkeeper for 4-0.
Following the conclusion of today’s game, Leeds will now
turn their full focus to the start of their 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Farke’s side kick things off at the City Ground on Saturday August 22 - exactly
a week from today.
