Paraag Marathe's exciting Leeds United transfer 'guarantee' with 'may be available' admission — YEP 12/8/26

Leeds United have around three weeks left to complete their transfer business.

Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has ‘guaranteed’ a currently off-limits player will become available later in the transfer window - with money kept aside just in case.

The Whites have less than three weeks to finalise their summer recruitment operation, with a trio of top-quality first-team additions already through the door. Harry Wilson joined on a free transfer from Fulham before a combined spend of around £74m on centre-back Tarik Muharemovic and goalkeeper James Trafford.

Last summer, Leeds’ patience in search of a striker paid off when after weeks of chasing Rodrigo Muniz, the chance to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free was snapped up. And Marathe believes a similar scenario could repeat itself in the next fortnight with the club financially prepared to act if so.

Asked by Men In Blazers about the hectic nature of late-summer dealings, Marathe said: “No, that's probably a fair assessment, because there's nothing like a good deadline to spur action. Last year, we had the failed attempt to get Harry Wilson on the Transfer Deadline Day.

“It literally felt like it went down to the last few seconds, and in the end we were unsuccessful. Fortunately, we stayed on him and stayed close to him, and we were able to get it done once his contract expired. But it definitely gets more frenzied near the end.

“But at the same time, if you're chasing a player who has options with many clubs, that could happen in June, July, and the same it could at the end, because it's just when a player has decided when he wants to make a decision, it might be a lot sooner than the transfer deadline day. So you're frenzied and stressed until the end.

“But also, it's important to keep a little bit extra in your kitty so that you have the ability to be nimble and flexible on that last day. I guarantee you, I don't know that we'll get this player, and I don't know who the player is, but I guarantee you there's a player right now who we've been told is totally unavailable and off limits that come a month from now, or 33 days from now, suddenly might be available, and may be available to Leeds.

“And so we need to be nimble enough to be able to make that move if that person becomes available to us.”
