Report: Plymouth Argyle 1-2 Leeds United — Leedsunited.com 3/5/25
CHAMPIONS!
Leeds United were crowned champions of the Sky Bet
Championship with a stunning dramatic final day victory over Plymouth Argyle at
Home Park!
The Whites needed to win on the South Coast owed to other
results and with the scores level deep into stoppage time, a fantastic run and
finish from Manor Solomon proved the difference, sparking wild scenes of
celebration in Devon, West Yorkshire and beyond!
Coming into the game, Daniel Farke’s side had secured
promotion to the Premier League having won five consecutive matches but the
title was still to be decided on the final day.
A first chance on goal came for United from a set-play. Up
from the back, Sam Byram leapt highest and connected well with his header but
Conor Hazard was well placed to save.
Unfortunately for Byram, with Plymouth’s first real attack
on goal, Mustapha Bundu’s strike cannoned back off the post and against the
defender, before heading into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead.
A number of set-play opportunities gave the Whites
opportunities to get back into the game, but again Hazard was on hand to deny
any attempt on his goal, whilst other efforts were off target.
With the whistle sounding for the break, the hosts went into
with the half-time advantage at Home Park.
HALF TIME: Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Leeds United
Coming back out for the second half, Leeds knew they needed
to start quickly with the title on the line and did just that, equalising just
a few minutes after the restart.
Clever play down the left saw Solomon cause problems before
then drilling low across the box, finding Willy Gnonto at the back post to turn
home at close range!
Seeing plenty of the ball, Farke’s side kept pushing forward in search of a winner. Solomon was lively again and had a couple of close efforts, as did Gnonto as he searched for another.
Entering the final 20 minutes, changes came from the bench.
Max Wober came on down the left-hand-side, whilst not long after, Patrick
Bamford and Largie Ramazani were both introduced into the attack.
The magical moment came deep into added on time. Gnonto did
brilliantly on the left flank, fizzing a clever pass in-field to Solomon.
Marauding into the area, the attacker twisted one way and then another, before drilling an inch-perfect finish into the bottom corner, in front of an away end that erupted!
Defending heroically until the final whistle sounded,
Solomon’s strike proved the difference to take Farke’s side to 100 points and,
most importantly, the Sky Bet Championship title!
