Rodolph Austin looks set to be handed an immediate recall as Leeds United fire up their midfield for a televised clash with Leicester City on Sunday.
Austin is available for the first time this season and vying to play at the KP Stadium with manager Brian McDermott admitting that the Jamaica international is “definitely ready” to feature in his starting line-up.
McDermott is expected to revert to the bulk of the team which set up a 2-1 win over Brighton last weekend but Austin has been added to his squad after serving a three-match ban and could oust Michael Tonge from United’s side in Leicester.
Tonge turned in an influential performance against Brighton, setting up Leeds’ first goal, but Austin caught the eye repeatedly during pre-season despite being rested during a number of friendlies due to earlier appearances for Jamaica’s national team.
A suspension carried over by him from the penultimate fixture of last season ended after Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Chesterfield and McDermott is considering using Austin’s power and energy as Leeds attempt to extend their 100 per cent start against one of the clubs backed heavily for promotion from the Championship.
Asked whether Austin would be named in his starting side, McDermott said: “He’s pretty close and he’s ready. He’s definitely ready.”
Leeds are as long as 4/1 to beat Leicester at the KP Stadium tomorrow, despite winning one and drawing two of their last three matches there.
McDermott said: “I’ll let the bookies take care of that. It’s a good test for us and we look forward to it.”
