Leeds United are expected to be in the market for a new no.10 during the January transfer window in order to bring in competition for Brenden Aaronson, behind the striker.

Aaronson has started 24 Championship games in a row and while he has shown glimpses of quality, and has had a hand in nine goals, there are games in which the United States star has gone missing for Leeds.

Leeds failed to bring in a no.10 in the summer despite links with Gustavo Hamer, James McAtee and Emi Buendia. Aston Villa star Buendia even rejected The Whites, according to chief executive Angus Kinnear.

But that has not stopped Leeds scouring the market to sign a new playmaker and Real Salt Lake’s Diego Luna is one of more-recent no.10’s to be linked, after winning the MLS Young Player of the Season award.

USMNT are not in action until March when the next international break takes place. But, boss Mauricio Pochettino is holding a training camp at Fort Lauderdale later this month and staging two friendlies.

Brenden Aaronson will not be a part of the squad, but MLS players are available given the 2025 season does not start until February. Ian Poveda played for Colombia last term in similar games, for example.

Real Salt Lake’s website say Pochettino has included Leeds target Luna in his squad after a superb 2024 MLS campaign. It will see him link up with the MLS’ best USA players and face Venezuela and Costa Rica.

Luna clocked up 31 MLS appearances last season and had a hand in 16 goals for his side, earning him the title of the MLS’ best young player. That of course, has earned the interest of plenty of clubs in Europe.

Leeds are one of those and in December, reports said that interested parties would have to pay £6.6m to sign Luna. A fee easily affordable for Leeds and a player that has the potential to overtake Aaronson.

Perhaps not initially, but at some point in the future. Luna has the potential to be a bargain for any club he joins and Leeds could do a lot worse than chancing their arm and bringing the playmaker to Yorkshire.
