Leeds United myth dispelled with club statement on record-breaking 15,000-plus mark — Leeds Live 26/7/24
Leeds United's new away shirt has sold more units in its opening 24 hours on sale than any other jersey in the club's history
More than 15,000 of Leeds United’s new away shirt were sold
in the first 24 hours on sale, breaking a club record and shattering a myth
about popular kit colours. The club has said the new yellow number has sold
more units in its opening 24 hours than any other shirt in their history.
LeedsLive understands the club hierarchy had to move heaven
and earth with Adidas to commission a yellow away shirt. The manufacturing
giant and industry at large had told United yellow football shirts do not sell
enough to justify their production.
Elland Road’s decision makers had been hopeful fans’
positive reaction on social media would translate into enough sales to offer
hope of future designs in that colour. If it does not continue to sell well,
this yellow shirt may be the last United have in a long time.
However, the fanbase has been out in force across the first
day of sales and gone beyond 15,000 units. The inclusion of United’s famous
‘smiley’ badge has gone down a storm with supporters.
A United statement said: “The new Leeds United yellow away
kit has proved to be a massive hit with supporters. Over 15,000 shirts were
sold on the first day of sales alone as fans couldn’t wait to get their hands
on the latest release.
“This meant it was a record breaking 24 hours for the club,
based on all previous Leeds United jersey sales. Inspired by the shirt worn in
1974, the yellow away shirt prominently displays the iconic smiley badge used
at the time.
“It also features a distinctive blue tipped button-up collar
and the signature adidas 3 stripes in split blue and white across the
shoulders. The Leeds United first team wore the kit for the first time during
Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Hannover 96 in Germany.”
