'Get me fined' - Jayden Bogle on getting it in the neck at Leeds United and that Derby play-off — Leeds Live 26/7/24
Jayden Bogle speaks to LeedsLive in Germany during Leeds United's pre-season training camp and opens up on the reunion with Ethan Ampadu as well as his memory of that Derby County play-off semi-final.
Being faced with a fine was not quite the first impression
Jayden Bogle wanted to make at Leeds United, but he enjoyed this first week
with the club nonetheless. There was a brief chance to meet his new team-mates
last Saturday, but as they flew to Germany, he was at Elland Road finalising
his transfer from Sheffield United.
Once he eventually arrived, later on Sunday, he was reunited
with Ethan Ampadu, a former Sheffield United colleague, who promptly asked
fines master Sam Byram what the charge was for a late arrival. The Wales
international finalised his loan to Bramall Lane in 2020 on the same day Bogle
arrived from Derby County.
“Eth’s a good guy,” Bogle tells LeedsLive. “A big character
in the group. It’s nice to know him coming into the group. He's made it made it
a bit easier as well.
“Everyone's made me feel welcome. Ethan, I knew from before,
so he's helped as well, trying to get me fined as soon as I arrived. It's a
fantastic group, staff as well. It’s been amazing.”
Bogle has someone in the squad he knows, but he knows Elland
Road too. Most memorably, he was in the Derby team that beat Marcelo Bielsa’s
Whites in the play-off semi-final of 2019. Binoculars, as you will have seen,
followed in his celebration.
The right-back remembers that night for the atmosphere when
he stepped out of the tunnel. More than 30,000 scarves were swirling around all
sides of the stadium.
“There was obviously a massive play-off game, but one thing
I do remember from it is walking out of the tunnel and the atmosphere,” he
said. “It was a crazy night. Walking out the tunnel and how loud it was. It
definitely gives the upper hand.”
Returning to the Premier League is, of course, the number
one objective for both Bogle and Leeds. Player and club have experienced
relegation in recent years. The 23-year-old can see the right standards are
being set from the ownership to the training ground.
“That is what attracted me to this club, the ambition to get
back into the Premier League,” he said. “That’s personally what I want to do
myself, as well. This is the perfect opportunity to give that a go and
everyone's standards are based around getting back into the Premier League.
“All the way up from the top, all the way down to the
training pitch, the standards everyone sets and putting that little bit of
pressure on yourself to perform.”
Conversations with manager Daniel Farke were central to
Bogle’s decision to swap South Yorkshire for West Yorkshire.
