Joe Gelhardt set for Wigan loan move - The Athletic 19/1/23

Joe Gelhardt looks set for a return to Wigan Athletic after the Championship side stepped in with a loan offer for the Leeds United forward.

Gelhardt is considering rejoining the club he left for Leeds in 2020, with United keen to send him out of Elland Road for the second half of the season.

The 20-year-old’s appearance have been heavily limited since the summer and his prospects of minutes under Jesse Marsch are lower again after the club-record signing of Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim last week.

Championship play-off contenders Swansea City were keen on taking Gelhardt and appeared to be leading the race to land him but Gelhardt is thought to favour a switch to Wigan, despite the club’s position at the bottom end of table.

Leeds continue to see Gelhardt as part of their long-term plans having handed him a new deal to 2027 in August.

He featured as a substitute in last night’s FA Cup win over Cardiff City but is now set to depart on a temporary basis.
