Patrick Bamford to return to Leeds squad for Villa clash but Crysencio Summerville out for a month — Jesse Marsch - The Athletic 12/1/23

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford will return to their matchday squad for their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Friday.

Leeds head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed on Thursday that Bamford was back in training but stated that winger Crysencio Summerville will be out for a month.

Summerville sustained an ankle injury during Leeds’ FA Cup third-round tie against Cardiff City and the 21-year-old had to be withdrawn 59 minutes into the 2-2 draw.

Bamford, meanwhile, has not played for Leeds since October, after he sustained a groin injury. The 29-year-old had a minor operation on the problem in December.

“Patrick Bamford is back in training and will be in the squad,” Marsch said. “Luis Sinisterra is getting closer but not quite ready.

“Crysencio Summerville is out for a month with an ankle injury.”

Marsch also commented on the treatment that Summerville and his fellow winger, 19-year-old Willy Gnonto, have received during their fledgling senior careers.

“The ankle injury (Summerville) sustained in the Cardiff match is a little bit of a talking point for me,” Marsch added.

“Between Cree (Summerville) and Willy (Gnonto) specifically, opponents have tried to bully them, they have a hard time containing them and I don’t think refs have protected those two well enough.

“It’s made them susceptible to injury. I’d like to see referees protect attacking players a little better.”
