Leeds lining up bid for Diogo Monteiro - The Athletic 18/1/23
By Phil Hay
Leeds United are lining up a bid for emerging Portuguese
centre-back Diogo Monteiro.
The Elland Road club want to bring the promising centre-back
to England before the end of this transfer window having identified him as part
of their ‘anticipating talent’ recruitment programme.
Monteiro, who turns 18 in the final days of January, is seen
as a major defensive prospect and is currently playing in Switzerland with
top-flight side Servette.
He was born in Geneva and joined Sevette as a youth-team
player, breaking into their first team this season.
Of Portuguese descent, he has been capped by Portugal at
youth level and is building a reputation as a ball-playing defender with strong
mobility and technique.
Leeds have already spent around £40million ($49.3m) on their
first-team squad in signing Max Wober and Georginio Rutter during this window
but they have been recruiting heavily at under-21 level for several years and
Monteiro is on their radar with English sides heading towards the January
deadline.
The West Yorkshire side remain interested in Angers
midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, the Morocco international who shone at the World
Cup, but are yet to decide whether to meet his £20million asking price.
