Leeds United's Giuseppe Bellusci has explained his very kind gesture of giving his shirt away to a disabled supporter.
Leeds United's defender Giuseppe Bellusci may have saved his side on the pitch, but it was his actions off it which have made a more notable impression today.
The Italian centre-back has impressed Whites fans with his performances since arriving this summer, but it was off-the-field that he shone today.
Although Bellusci scored the goal in his side's match against Sheffield Wednesday, which earned them a point, he gave his shirt away at the end of the match to a disabled fan.
It is a gesture which has been widely documented and Bellusci explained his reasons behind the very admirable action after the match.
“It was born during the warm-up," the Italian defender said to Di Marzio.com. "We were trying some long balls and unfortunately one was too long and hit the fan on the wheelchair in the back. After the incident, I promised him that I would give him my jersey, regardless of the result. So after the game and I reminded him of the episode: at first he didn’t understand the reason of the gesture, then he was moved.”
Bellusci has already become a cult figure at Elland Road because of his style in possession and this has only gone on to further endear himself to the Leeds faithful.
Although the fans were largely disappointed that they were not able to pick up the three points against Wednesday, this action has been the major talking point of the game and Bellusci deserves a lot of credit for his kind-hearted gesture.
