Jonson Clarke-Harris caps Millers revival at New York Stadium after visitors dominated first-half of a pulsating Yorkshire derby

As Frank Sinatra’s classic anthem New York, New York bellowed out, Rotherham celebrated goals from Alex Revell and Jonson Clarke-Harris as they came from behind to stun Leeds United in a pulsating Yorkshire Championship derby.
Mirco Antenucci’s 30th minute opener had threatened to open the floodgates in a game that looked like a mere formality for the visitors until Revell’s 58th-minute equaliser. Clarke-Harris then belted in a 65th-minute winner for Steve Evans’s team who were transformed from also-rans to all conquering heroes in the second period.
Bidding for their first victory under the stewardship of Darko Milanic, after three failed attempts Leeds, streamed forward at every opportunity.
Alex Mowatt, who spent the opening minutes interchanging at the apex of Leeds midfield diamond ghosted past several Rotherham defenders but Italian forward Antenucci could only prod his cross wide of the upright in the eighth minute.
French forward Souleymane Doukara bustled his way through the home defence in the 21st minute but his finish lacked the aggression to trouble the Millers goalkeeper Adam Collin.
If Evans’s plan had been to lull the visitors into a false sense of security it nearly succeeded seconds later. Alex Revell’s incisive pass was well controlled by Matt Derbyshire but as the home fans imagined the most damaging of riposte’s to Leeds early dominance, the former Blackburn striker fired meekly at Marco Silvestri.
Leeds clicked back into life and Antenucci’s composed finish delivered lead. That advantage should have been doubled before the interval. England youth international Lewis Cook threatened to waltz through the Rotherham defence in the 37th minute.
Absent Leeds owner Massimo Cellino’s apparent dislike for the number 17 won’t have been helped by events here on 17 October after half-time. Dominant long periods Leeds were suddenly pushed back and when Silvestri could only parry Ben Pringle’s rasping shot Revell applied the simplest of finishes to restore parity.
Jubilation inside the New York Stadium had hardly quelled when second half substitute Clarke-Harris was allowed to collect the ball unopposed 30 yards from Silvestri’s goal. The former Coventry striker strode forward to smash the ball beyond the despairing dive of Leeds Italian custodian to complete an amazing turnaround.
Antenucci almost provided over two thousand visiting supporters with 84th minute salvation but his drive was tipped on to the post by Collin.
