Leeds United: McDermott starting to make subtle but significant changes

YEP 22/6/13
Brian McDermott has revealed that several Leeds United players have been claiming a head-start ahead of the start of pre-season training next Thursday.
A number have already been in at Thorp Arch to work on their fitness before the official start on June 27 – and the Whites boss couldn’t be happier at the level of commitment shown.
He said: “A number of players have been in and started quite early and they are really keen to make sure they are ready and up to speed when they come back, which is great.”
Several changes will greet the first-team squad – that is those who already haven’t been voluntarily putting in the extra sessions – when they return, with a number of alterations taking place in the run-up to next Thursday.
The sight of a main training pitch to the exact same measurements of Elland Road is one, while changes to the lay-out of the main building will see first-teamers and academy players intermingle freely – with McDermott eager to build a ‘one club’ mentality.
McDermott added: “Work is being done and the physio room has been moved downstairs and the academy and first-team physio rooms will be adjacent to each other next to the gym, which makes sense to me.
“I want everyone together and I think it’s really important to be able to see everyone and I want that flow to be right.
“We have to do the best we possibly can and build a football club. That was what I was asked to do when I came in. I think if you build a football club, a team will evolve and that’s when we are going to successful and what we are trying to do, day by day.
“We are also trying to get the pitches sorted out and barrier them off and we’ve got an irrigation system going up on the number one pitch. The pitches we train on will be the same size as Elland Road.
“These are things that are really important and the details that make the difference.”
