Pascal Struijk's eight-year tenure at Leeds United has
officially ended with the defender completing a move to fellow Premier League
side Brighton and Hove Albion.
Out of contract next summer, Struijk turned down a new offer
this summer from Leeds and instructed the club of his decision to fly the nest
having arrived at Elland Road as an 18-year-old in 2018. Due to his great
service and the manner of how the negotiations have gone, Leeds have worked
with the Dutchman to facilitate an exit this summer, with the Whites selling
Struijk to Brighton for an undisclosed fee.
Leeds Live understands the Whites will receive £18m up
front, with add-ons potentially lifting the deal to £20m, while a sell-on
clause has been added to the contract. It's also been confirmed Leeds needed to
complete the deal before the end of June to ensure the club complied with this
year's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
In a statement Leeds said; "Last summer, the decision
was taken to keep all key players at Elland Road, to give the club the best
possible chance of Premier League survival, with the expectation that player
sales would be needed to remain PSR (Profit & Sustainability Rules)
compliant over a three-year accounting window ending 30th June 2026.
"The club’s higher than expected 14th place finish and
run to the Emirates FA Cup semi-final vindicated this decision, with the
increased income and single sale of Struijk ensuring the club remains within
PSR limits."
Struijk attracted notable interest in the past but stood
firm following relegation back to the Championship three years ago, with the
club holding form last summer when an option to sell could have been taken to
avoid a looming Profit and Sustainability Rules infringement.
Arriving having struggled at Ajax as a teenager to make a
telling impression, Struijk impressed on an initial trial before signing for
Leeds on a long-term deal and making his way into the team under the leadership
of Marcelo Bielsa, playing a role in the promotion-winning season before
establishing himself in the team the following year in the Premier League.
He will leave a double title winner with Leeds and a big
part of the club's recent history, both as a key component on the field and a
loveable character off the field.
