Ex-Leeds United man Karl Darlow issues exit statement with 'special' Man Utd opportunity confirmed — YEP 14/7/26

Karl Darlow has issued a messaged to Leeds United after his move to Manchester United to take up a ‘special opportunity’ was confirmed.

The goalkeeper turned down the chance to remain at Elland Road, where a new deal was on the table. Leeds could not offer a guaranteed starting place for the 35-year-old due to their plans to bring in a keeper in the summer transfer window, and Darlow opted to move to their bitter rivals Manchester United.

He took to Instagram to pen a farewell message, set to Olivia Dean’s Ok Love You Bye, after helping obtain and then secure Premier League status. “To Leeds United,” he began. “What a special chapter this has been. Helping this club achieve promotion back to the Premier League is something I’ll always be proud of, and to know the club will be staying where it belongs makes it even more rewarding. To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for making my time here so memorable. I leave with amazing memories, friendships, and immense pride in having played a part in this club’s journey. To the fans, thank you for the incredible backing. Your passion for this club is truly unmatched!! It’s been an honour to represent you all. I’ll be watching on from afar and wishing everyone connected with Leeds nothing but success. Thank you for everything.”

Though the lyrics of Darlow’s chosen song include the line ‘don't say you won't forgive me ‘cause you always do’ his message and well wishes are likely to fall on mostly deaf ears in a fanbase with no fondness for the club over the Pennines. In quotes released by Manchester United, the 35-year-old Wales international described the move as a ‘special opportunity.’

“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” he said. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.

“This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”

Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”
