Leeds splashed out a club record £27m to sign Spanish international Rodrigo from Valencia last summer but the forward's first season at Leeds was disrupted by injuries and coronavirus.

However, the 30-year-old ended the campaign in style and bagged four goals and one assist in his last four games as newly-promoted Leeds sealed a ninth-placed finish upon their Premier League return.

The record signing was still not included in Spain boss Luis Enrique's squad for the Euros but Rodrigo has expressed his delight at his first season with Leeds and is looking onwards and upwards to next season.

The Spaniard was given his first taste of playing in front of United's fans in last Sunday's season finale at home to West Brom as 8,000 supporters were finally permitted back to the Elland Road stands for the first time since March 2020 due to the country's battle against COVID-19.

Rodrigo netted the opening goal as Leeds ended their first season back in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory.

“Everyone enjoyed it on Sunday, we’ve had an amazing season and of course we were back playing in front of fans,” said Rodrigo.

“Football without the fans is not the same, so we are very happy to win the game for them.

“It’s been an amazing season for me and the club.

"I think I’ve finished the season well, of course I had some injuries which didn’t allow me to play more games, but I’m very happy with how everything finished.

“There is a great atmosphere in the dressing room, we have a fantastic club and I really enjoyed playing in front of the fans.

“We are looking forward to the summer now, resting a little bit and then onto the next season.

“We hope when we return all of the fans will be back in the stadium, I’m sure next season will be harder than this, but we have a great group and I believe we can do another great season next year.”
