Sport Witness 20/6/21 Radrizzani says Leeds United ‘project under construction’ as he’s quizzed on big deal

Andrea Radrizzani is being strongly linked in Italy with a takeover bid for Salernitana.

The club is owned by Claudio Lotito, and their promotion to Serie A has presented a serious issue for the businessman.

He already owns Lazio, and with the rules set by the FIGC (Italian Federation) that you cannot own two clubs in the same league, something needs to change, such as him selling up.

That’s where the Leeds United owner comes in, as the Italian has been looking for an investment opportunity in his home country, preferably a club in the top flight.

Lotito has been given until June 25th to sort the situation out, so time is running out quickly. There was talk last week of Radrizzani being part of a group ready to raise their offer to €60m.

Therefore, the Leeds United boss being in Capaccio Paestum this weekend has caused a bit of a stir. The Italian town is know for being home to the ruins of an ancient Greek city, although in this case the crucial issue is it’s also in the province of Salerno… where Salernitana is.

Stile TV tracked him down to Vicolo delle Tavernelle on Saturday. That’s a restaurant, and they go as far as to say what he ate… ‘buffalo mozzarella and fresh fish’.

Radrizzani was asked if he’d visited Salerno earlier that day, and replied: “I already know where you want to go with this question, I apologise but I can’t say anything right now, we’ll see what happens. Tomorrow I will be in Rome at the stadium, I promised my son that I would take him to see an Italy match at the European Championships. I can only say that, beyond football, Paestum is wonderful and you will see me here again. Now we are focused only on Leeds United, a project still under construction with which we want to reap many satisfactions and successes.”

The answer was diplomatic and polite to those doing the questioning, but the rumours surrounding the big deal will obviously be boosted by Radrizzani’s visit to the area, which is more than 300km from where he’ll be watching Italy play today.
