Fulham attacker Ross McCormack explains his departure from Leeds United in July.
Ross McCormack was a Leeds United hero until he made the £11 million switch to Fulham in July.
The 28-year-old Scotland international, who can play both as a striker and as a winger, had been on the books of the West Yorkshire club since 2010 and had established himself as one of the best players in the Championship.
McCormack had been tipped to move to the Premier League at some stage as it became increasingly clear that Leeds were not going to gain promotion to the English top flight anytime soon.
Which is why the former Cardiff City star’s move to fellow Championship side Fulham came as a surprise, with many Leeds fans not happy with his decision.
Their anger was fuelled by suggestions from Leeds owner Massimo Cellino that McCormack had forced through a move to the London outfit.
McCormack has now given his side of the story, dismissing claims that he had not turned up for training in order to get his wish and leave for Fulham, who suffered relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.
‘I was told by the club not to train because they were talking to Fulham’, the Daily Mail quotes the 28-year-old as saying. ‘They didn’t want me injured with the size of the fee - it was important to the club that they didn’t miss out on that
‘I didn’t train on the Thursday or Friday. We were off Saturday and Sunday. Monday was the day the fee was agreed. Leeds were going to Italy for pre-season so I was down here doing my medical...
‘It’s just the way that it was always going to be. It was never going to be: thanks for what you did last season, thanks for the help you’ve given the club. It was pretty nasty in the end to be honest’.
McCormack’s version is distinctly different from how it was initially thought his transfer unfolded, and maybe this will help Leeds fans understand the situation a bit better.
But don’t be surprised if Cellino responds to McCormack soon.
