McDermott - Youngsters to benefit from this season
Leeds United manager Brian McDermott says he was delighted to get the three points, admitting they needed the win after a poor run in 2014.
Leeds ended a run of six games without a win as they secured just their third win of 2014 with a 2-1 home win over Millwall but McDermott eluded to the fact they have a young squad who will only improve from a problematic second half of the season with the uncertainty of the clubs future still unclear.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, McDermott said, 'We're fighting for our lives as a club with the ownership situation. We want to get it sorted out as quickly as possible.
'We've had a run of form that has been difficult to say the least, but you have to remember how many young players are in this team.
"Sam Byram, Alex Mowatt, Connor Wickham, Jack Butland, Tom Lees, Jason Pearce, Luke Murphy and Matt Smith. There are an awful lot of young players who will benefit from the season we have had and everything that has gone with it.
'We needed to win and we're delighted that we've hung on.'
Matt Smith and Ross McCormack scored first half goals after Millwall had made the brighter start to the game.
DJ Campbell set up a nervous finish to the game after he scored with a 25-yard volley but Leeds were not to be denied a crucial three points to avoid them being sucked into a relegation scrap.
Attention will now turn to the off-field problems at Elland Road as the club wait for the Football League to make a decision on the takeover of the club by Massimo Cellino.
The Football League promised a decision within ten days and that time is up on Monday. It is believed the Football League were awaiting a decision from the Italian courtrooms last week with Cellino charged with tax evasion. Cellino was found guilty on Tuesday and the Football League have been gathering more information before making what could be a crucial decision on the clubs future. Current owners GFH Capital are believed to be losing in the region of £1 million a month at the club and Cellino having already put £10 million into the club having exchanged contracts with GFH Capital back in February.
It has been a tough time for McDermott, who was sacked before being reinstated in his manager`s position at the club back in January and the Leeds boss is hoping for a positive outcome this week. "We need an owner that really wants to carry this club forward and that's the most important thing.
'This place is uncertain; fans pick up on it, players do and staff do.
'We want the uncertainty to go away and once we've got a decision and the owner comes in and someone who has got clout and can carry us forward, it gives us a chance to put this club back to where it belongs," continued McDermott.
The 'Together Leeds` consortium led by Mike Farnan is believed to be waiting to return with their own bid if Cellino is denied permission to complete his 75 per cent stake in the club.
