Report: Leeds United 2-2 Swansea City — Leedsunited.com 29/3/25
A point each at Elland Road.
Leeds United returned from the international break to face
Swansea City at Elland Road in the Sky Bet Championship, which saw both teams
take a point from the game.
Prior to kick-off, both teams came together to observe a
minute of applause in memory of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, as we
approached the 25th anniversary of their tragic passing. Ethan Ampadu and Ben
Cabango, the captains of each side, laid a wreath each in memory, whilst the
crowd all stood together in applause.
When the whistle sounded for kick-off, the Whites wanted to
start the game quickly and did just that! After 35 seconds played, Daniel
Farke’s side would go ahead with the first attack of the match. After plenty of
pinball and deflections around the box, the most alert to tap home at close
range was Brenden Aaronson!
Swansea looked to hit back instantly themselves though and
had a big opportunity to do so from the penalty spot. Joe Rodon was the player
adjudged to have made a foul in the box on Lewis O’Brien, but after Josh Tymon
stepped up to take the penalty, Illan Meslier guessed the right way and
produced a superb save to turn it around the post!
The post would be called into action moments later though.
With Meslier beaten this time, an in-swinging free-kick saw Ben Cabango flick a
header against the woodwork, and thankfully the ‘keeper was well placed to deal
with the rebound.
Despite Leeds having the advantage in the match, the away
side had been the most dangerous side in the first 45 minutes. Other than a Sam
Byram header late in the half, the hosts hadn’t created many other openings
before the whistle sounded for the break.
HALF TIME: Leeds United 1-0 Swansea City
Back out for the second half, neither side had made a
change. The atmosphere around the ground increased, as both teams looked to
battle once more.
The score remained the same as we approached the hour mark,
as Farke made a first change. Having returned from injury at the heart of
midfield, Ampadu was replaced by Ao Tanaka in a straight swap.
In a big opportunity, quick feet from Aaronson tricked the
defence and he chipped the ball into the box for Joel Piroe, who acrobatically
shot at goal only to see Lawrence Vigouroux make an excellent save.
Still dangerous at the other end, Ronald forced a good save
from Meslier, volleying from the edge of the box. The resulting corner did then
see the Swans equalise, as Harry Darling was on hand to turn home at close
range.
With 20 minutes to play, there was a triple change from the
bench. Junior Firpo, Largie Ramazani and Mateo Joseph all entered the game as
their side looked for a winner.
It would be Dan James who went closest as we approached the
final 10 minutes. After collecting Joe Rothwell’s pass he cut inside and shot
left-footed, forcing Vigouroux to once more tip it around the post.
In the last five minutes of the 90, a final change would
make an instant impact from Farke. Willy Gnonto was summoned from the bench and
would instantly get on the scoresheet!
A Rothwell corner met the head of Pascal Struijk who powered
a header on goal, which was well saved, before the follow up was smashed home
on the rebound from our Italian international to put his side ahead.
With stoppage time still to play though and seven minutes
added, the away side would equalise. Another substitute impacted on the game,
as Zan Vipotnik drilled low into the net to secure his side a point.
