Stefan Borson claims PSR punishment on cards in Premier League verdict — MOT Leeds News 16/4/24

Stefan Borson has insisted Leeds United will be in breach of
the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules if they are promoted from
the Championship this season.
The finance expert explained that, due to a £20million hit
to promotion bonuses if they do go up while at the same time as their decrease
in revenue, they will breach the rules and be punished.
This is despite insistence from both Kieran Maguire and Phil
Hay that Leeds have remained within the PSR limits thanks to player sales
despite their dip in revenue.
Speaking live on talkSPORT [16 April, 11:15], Borson
explained: “If Leeds get promoted this season, they will fail PSR because of a
£20million hit to promotion bonuses.
“Of course, they’ve not had the countervailing revenue
increase, they’ve actually had a revenue decrease. Ironically, by getting
promotion they could fail PSR and be punished in the Premier League even though
the only reason they failed is because they got promoted.”
Could Leeds United face points deductions for PSR breaches?
Points deductions have been handed to both Everton and
Nottingham Forest by the Premier League as a result of their breaches of the
financial rules, with Leicester facing a similar fate if they are promoted, so
there is no reason Leeds wouldn’t be treated in the same way.
Kieran Maguire reassured fans that Leeds would not be in
breach of profit and sustainability rules thanks to player sales. However, the
losses before player sales had been raised as a concern given the extent of
those losses.
Phil Hay, meanwhile, explained that while the club is fine
for now thanks to previous sales, promotion to the Premier League remains
crucial financially if Leeds are to avoid further problems emerging due to PSR
breaches.
If, as Borson claims, promotion would take Leeds over their
limit for PSR, it seems almost inevitable at Elland Road. The target for this
season has always been to win promotion to the Premier League, so if that comes
with a points deduction, it would come as a huge blow.
So the money which comes from promotion to the Premier
League should bring more security with it, but the promotion bonuses would put
Leeds in breach, so the situation seems almost impossible to navigate.
